Where the money goes, item by item.

A sponsorship is a budget for physical work on a particular reef, plus the cost of proving what that work did. There is no third category, and if there were you should ask about it.

The budget

Five things a reef programme actually spends on.

Proportions shift with the reef, the season and the distance from a working port. The categories do not.

  1. Vessel time in the heat window The largest line by some distance. A hull, its fuel, its crew and its treatment stage, positioned over a defined patch of reef during the weeks the thermal stress peaks — which is when the work matters and also when weather makes it hardest.
  2. Gases and consumables The working input is gas, prepared to the concentration the water reading calls for. Procurement and logistics to a remote reef are a real cost and they are inside the programme rather than billed as a surprise.
  3. Instruments in the water Loggers and profiles reading temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and turbidity through depth, in place before the season begins and left running through it. This is the equipment that turns an intervention into evidence.
  4. Survey work by somebody independent Benthic survey of the treated area and of an untreated comparison area, before and after, by a party who is not the operator and does not benefit from a good number. Structurally the most important line and rarely the biggest.
  5. Publication and the sponsor statement Compiling the record, publishing it in full, and drafting the exact claim it supports. Small, and it is the line that makes the other four defensible.

Notice what is not on that list. No marketing production, no ambassador, no reef adoption certificate. If you want a film made about the programme, commission one — but commission it separately, so the money for the reef stays the money for the reef.

Why there is no price on this page.

Reef intervention costs vary more than almost any other category of environmental work, and the published evidence says so plainly.

Three orders of magnitude is not a rounding error

Those figures cover restoration generally rather than in-water treatment specifically, and we cite them for one purpose: three orders of magnitude between the cheapest and dearest technique is what the published record actually looks like, which is why a confident per-hectare rate quoted before a site visit is arithmetic nobody has done.

A price on a Reef Hero programme comes after an operator has read the site — its depth, its access, its distance from a port, the stressor it is actually suffering from, and the length of its heat window.

A note on that citation

The review is Bayraktarov and colleagues in Ecological Applications, 2016 — a synthesis of 235 studies and 954 observations across coral, seagrass, mangrove, saltmarsh and oyster restoration. It is worth opening rather than taking our word for. The three figures above are its coral reef subset.

The season

A programme runs on the reef's calendar, not yours.

Thermal stress arrives at different times on different coastlines, so the shape below is relative to a reef's own peak rather than to a financial year.

Why the statement is worth anything at all

Somebody independent has to have stood over the measurement.

A sponsor statement is worth precisely as much as the party who took the reading underneath it. If that party was the operator, and only the operator, what you have funded is a press release with a boat in it.

Which is why continuous outside oversight is built into every programme the operator runs, and why it is not a favour extended to sponsors. Alarivean imposes it on itself. Local scientific institutions are engaged for the length of the season — the marine institute, the park authority's science team, the university that has surveyed that stretch of coast for twenty years. The qualification is that they are already accountable for that reef and will still be there long after the season closes.

They receive the water-quality telemetry the crew is steering on, as it arrives. They can put their own instruments in the water beside ours. They keep their own copy of all of it. And the benthic survey your statement finally rests on is theirs — fixed transects, treated area and untreated comparison area, before and after.

For a sponsor the consequence is narrow and worth a great deal. When somebody in an unfriendly room asks who measured it, the answer is a named institution and a published record, and neither of them is us.

Work that nobody independent is watching produces a number nobody is obliged to believe — and that stays true even when the number is honest.

The sentence you get to print

Supportable and unsupportable, side by side.

This is the part sponsors underestimate and communications teams later wish somebody had written down. So here it is written down. Both examples below are illustrations of shape rather than statements about any real programme, because there is not yet one to quote.

The shape a record can support

A named share of a named season of in-water treatment, across a defined area of a named reef, with independent survey before and after the thermal peak, and the measured change set out in a published record anyone can open.

Specific, bounded, attributed, checkable. Boring on purpose.

The shape it cannot, however tempting

That you are protecting the reef. That your programme is saving coral reefs. That you have offset a footprint by restoring marine habitat. That the reef is now resilient to climate change.

Each of those claims something outside the perimeter, the period or the measurement. Each is the sentence that gets quoted back at you.

A sponsor is of course free to write whatever they like. But the record we publish will be sitting in public alongside it, and the gap between the two is the only reputational risk in this entire arrangement.

Five straight answers

How much does a reef sponsorship cost?

There is no rate card, and a figure quoted before somebody has read the site would be invented.

Published reviews of coral restoration report a median near US$400,000 per hectare at 2010 prices, ranging from roughly US$6,000 for a nursery phase to US$4,000,000 for building artificial substrate, with the authors warning that real costs sit two to four times above reported medians. That spread is exactly why pricing follows the site read.

What if the reef bleaches anyway?

Then the record says it bleached, the readings show how far and for how long, and your statement says the same thing.

A programme is judged on whether the work was done properly and measured honestly. Nobody controls a marine heatwave, so nobody can write you a guarantee against one — and a contract that appears to offer you one is worth reading twice.

Can we bring our own marine biologist?

Yes, and please do. Sponsors who send a scientist to the baseline survey end up with a much better sponsorship than sponsors who read a summary six months later.

Bring the sceptical one rather than the enthusiastic one.

Do we get exclusivity over the reef?

No. Reefs sit in territorial waters, generally inside a marine authority's jurisdiction, and often inside a protected area with its own management plan.

What a sponsor holds is a defined share of a defined programme for a defined season. Several sponsors can hold shares of the same season, and none of them acquires a right over the reef or a veto on who else helps.

How long does a sponsorship run?

A programme is built around one thermal season, which falls at different times on different coastlines.

Multi-season commitments are worth more scientifically, because a run of comparable measurements says things a single season cannot. One season is still a legitimate place to start, and it is the honest way to find out whether you want a second.
